Artist Statement

How minimal can I go to get my ideas realized? How quickly can I work before thoughts get in the way? Foundations and initial plans capture my attention. Commercial building materials fascinate me. Process inspires me. Through construction and deconstruction, I strive to create with only the essentials.

Materials used include commercial building supplies as well as found and ready-made objects. I also experiment with photography and film. Painter’s tarps are a dominant and specific material connected to my childhood. We had shelves stacked with them in our basement due my parent’s start-up decorating business. I use the tarps in a variety of ways to create, both then and now: as a surface, sculpture and for creating space.

I develop a “timeline” with my work, allowing flexibility in arrangement and manipulation for site-specific installation or stand-alone pieces. The importance of material is presented to the viewer. Line, form, shape, space and a minimalist color palette are present, unified by repetition. Going forward, I’m focused on 3-D work, public art, technology and adding auditory elements to my practice.

Everything is connected.
